Celebrate Bastille Day 2018 in Paris

    The History of Bastille Day

Experience Bastille Day 2018 in luxurious settings at Fraser Suites Le Claridge Champs-Elysées, Paris. Bastille Day, formally called la Fête nationale, is the French National Day which is celebrated every 14th July. The French National Day commemorates the first anniversary of Storming of the Bastille which took place on the 14th July in 1789, during the region of King Louis XVI, and the locking-in of the French Revolution.

In the earlier centuries prior to Bastille Day, France had been under increasing archaic rule through the old monarchy. After years of misrule by the Monarchy suffering from increasing taxes and high food prices, the French people united in an effort to take control of their own country.

The people of Paris joined together to march on the Bastille, which was a 14th century medieval fortress. The Bastille then became a state prison, used by the King to imprison his opponents. The storming of the prison marked the beginning of the French revolution. It took only three years to transform France into a land of equality and democracy, resulting in the likes of the declaration of the rights of man and of the citizen and a march on Versailles.

To commemorate the storming of Bastille, on its one-year anniversary on the 14th July 1790, delegates from across the country assembled in Paris to proclaim their allegiance as one national community at the Fête de la Fédération. Bastille Day was then declared a French national day in 6th July 1880 and since then, the French celebrate with colourful parties and fairs.
