Visit one of the most iconic Parisian monuments in the city, the Grand Palais
There are few venues in the world where you can attend an event or exhibition in an outstanding historic site that is a gem of classicism and art noveau. The French capital is home to the Grand Palais - an imposing, striking building that hosts around 40 events annually, including Chanel fashion shows and the Art Paris Art Fair. Over 2 million visitors from around the world are welcomed through its doors every year. It was dedicated “by the French Republic to the glory of French art” and was built in the typical Parisian Beaux-Arts style of that period when it first opened its doors to the public in 1900.
The Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées or more commonly known as the ‘Grand Palais’ is one of the cities’ best known attractions. No trip to Paris is complete without visiting the Palais which is located in the 8th arrondissement at the Champs-Elysées. History of the Grand Palais
Part of the charm of the Grand Palais is its fantastic location; nestled between the iconic River Seine and the most famous street in Paris, the Champs-Élysées. The Grand Palais has one of the most prestigious addresses in the French capital, and with being just a few minutes’ walk away from the nearest metro station too, it’s easily accessible for visitors coming to attend shows and exhibitions. Having recently undergone renovations, it is very much the impressive exhibition space that it was over 100 years ago.
Nowadays, the Grand Palais is a busy complex, hosting many events, performances and exhibitions. The couture fashion house Chanel annually hosts many of its fashion shows here, creating and setting up elaborate and expensive surroundings for its models and attendees. Science enthusiasts will enjoy viewing the exhibits of the science museum the Palais de la Découverte located in the west wing. Sporting fixtures also regularly take place here - the Palais was the host venue of the 2010 World Fencing Championships. Many are unaware, but a major police station is positioned in the basement which helps protect the exhibits on show at the Galeries nationales du Grand Palais, and in particular works in the picture exhibition "Salons" as the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, Salon d'Automne and Salon Comparaisons.
This year looks set to be another record-breaking year for the complex, with exhibitions such as the spring themed Jardins and Rodin: the centennial exhibition both set to draw in large crowds. Find out more about what’s on at the Grand Palais from the official website here.
